Winter could be here

It is and has been up in the mountains. This is the first Sunday I haven't been on my snowboard. I'm sorry but I beat myself up too much last weekend. Even a week later I'm only at about 75%. My lead leg and hip are just really banged up. Thursday i was able to walk/jog for 2.5 miles. Same with Friday and Saturday. Sunday the 'G', pups and I went jogging over to rainbow (graffitti) falls. We did 3/1 on the uphill way there and just had fun on the way back. The 3/1 were telephone poles. So the poles were random distances. HEY it worked.
I'm sitting in my chair watching clouds rollover the Peak and hearing the 80 mph gusting winds. This has been a strange winter so far. No real snow or cold weather. Has global warming changed to just global change?
After the boarding last Sunday we stayed up and saw Weezer in concert. Having not paid any attention to them I was surprised at how much I liked them. The warm up band was even better. They just played a bunch of Led Zeplin I and II. 'G' is always amazed I can remember all the words to songs I haven't heard in 30+ years. But in high school I didn't watch TV; I just listened to music while playing pool. Need to do more of that.

I hate the internet

Well maybe just my provider or maybe just my laptop. Many times I have written a post and cannot publish it because my service has been interupted. And I can't seem to be able to post from my i-pad. Now I am computer illiterate but come on. On the fittness front all is well as in almost ZERO. I will try and get in something tonight but it will be no more than 45 minutes. I'm staying away from wheat products so my breathing is improved. Now I just need to not be so sore from snowboarding so I can work out.

S'up

Not my fitness! But that IS going to change.
It's unbelievable to see so little snow on Pikes Peak yet the snow in Summit County is great for early season. The 'G' and I spent Turkey Day morning @ Vail. The snow was great. And I learned opening a new store does absolutley nothing for boarding muscles. My quads wear almost in a state of cramp after 2 runs. Trying the new 'non-stepin' bindings were good but I used bunches of ATP just getting buckled up. May go back to the old bindings.
Do you know why it;'s called 'Black Friday'?
Working till 2 Saturday then back up to the mountains.

Fall/Winter

The weather can not make up it's mind. Maybe there is something to this global warming shit.
The liars have called for temps in the high 60's today. It's freaking Halloween! Where's my snow.
Well the new store has been open 3 weeks. It's been a bunch of work and I know it will pay off. But the cost as I knew has come from my health and fitness. All the construction dust and eating poorly has lead to sinus infection. The wind ain't helping my sinus either. The nette pot has helped me delay the infection but alas I feel like someone has attached a snot gun to my head and fires at will.
But today is a new day and I'll take the PJ out for a run/walk. I'll report later. Maybe much later!

A new dawn, the same ole day

Been a while. Lots going on. The Colorado Running Company #2 is opening Friday. I've been doing most of the construction myself. It's fun but trying to do that and run Tejon is hard. Jillian has been doing her huge part but thebuck stops here! Things are on track not like my body. Hence the running is once again taking a seat behing my ever growing ass and belly. Speaking of asses I know I am but what are you?
'G' and I had a great vacation in Monterey,CA. Food, ocean, running and sleep were just what I needed. 'G' felt so good she relapsed and took another week off work. I could almost move back. Running was like butter. I swear (and I never swear) I was breathing thru my navel.
I'll post a bit more later just because.

A nice gift.

Yesterday was my birthday. I am happy mom and dad got together in bed 57 years and 9 months ago; don't know about you?
Met Jonathon, MC and Jared at the Loop Sunday afternoon for a small quiet dinner. That was the extent of the celebration. My run yesterday was NOT. For some reason my right foot decided to develop a knot in my arch. Could it be the new Birks? Anyway I though a walk with the pups and Super G would be better than hurting myself further. And today the knot has not made an appearance. With age comes.... more ugliness.

Old School

My watch/HR band broke Saturday. I'm not in a big hurry to get it fixed. And I'll have to send it back to the manufacturer. So I've just been looking at the kitchen clock before I go for a run and looking when I get back. Just like the old days! My 45 minute run was 65 minutes and last night my 30 minute run was 50 minutes. Maybe it is just the cooler weather but not looking at a watch during the run has made me run longer. I don't dread the minutes slowly, ever so slowly ticking past. I'm gonna keep with the no watch scenerio for a bit.
Writing of cooler weather there was white stuff on Pikes Peak yesterday. Who cares if it was hail or snow; it was white. And I'm calling it the first snow of the season! So take that!

Surprise

Got in my 5 days this week. But for me the big news was Friday. Usually I walk with Ted in the am then try and run later. Try being the key word. For those who don't know Ted; he is a very accomplished runner. Like me he was a sprinter in HS and later ran the marathon the graduated to Ultra distance stuff. Ted was still placing in his age group and kicking some young ass until ~ 20 months ago. He had surgery to replace his hip. No more running was what he was told. But about 2 weeks ago he went in for his last checkup. His Doc told him he could run on the treadmill. But as an untra guy Ted doesn't take to the 'mill. Ted asks if he can run trails and softer stuff. YEP was the reply. So Friday Ted starts running during our walk. WTF I asked? Then the story is told. Nothing like ruining a good walk with a run. I'm so happy for Ted.

UpDate

Now a pic from the OLD days do I look like a runner?
Busy July but now it's August and it will be even busier! Jogging has been sporatic at best. What few runs I've gotten in have been fun. And I'll take fun or druggery on any jog.

Why do I live here?

Amazing where you can run just minutes from my house. Got a rare day off and went out for a 2 hour run with PJ. This was an uphill turn around and run down. Out for 2 hours and saw NO ONE.
I need more runs like this!

Almost July

Been a bit but NO News is good right? Lots going on and all of it very exciting.
First Tony K finished 2nd at Western yesterday after battling for the lead all day. Could he have won if he ran his race? Maybe that was his race. He'll be at CRC the Saturday before BTMR so come ask. Or you'll have to beleive me.
I got a pair if Air Pegasus 27 and let me tell you, I feel energized by these shoes. You would think I was running barefoot or something because I haven't felt this way about a shoe or my running in a while. This shoe has just enough of everything that I need. I want to go run in this shoe. Say what you will about the barefoot people and I am not one of them but ask me about this shoe!
Speaking of barefoot running lets see how many of these 'natural' runners are still running after 42 years. I started running at 14 now I'm 56 and feel new life.

Summer

I've come to a realization; I can't run @ MVP. There is something there that kills my lungs.
I tried last night again and my lungs were almost okay but my skin was itching so bad from all the pollen. Tonight a run in the Garden was great! Lungs fine skin okay. Must be something @ MVP.

Almost

The last couple of weeks have been good. Somethings gotta turn soon. I've run 15 out of the last 16 days. The weather has not been cooperative till this morning. Now it's clouding up and we'll get some afternoon thunderstorms.
This past week was my 19th wedding anniversary. Hard to believe Cindy has put up with me that long. Or have I put up with her that long? hmmm
The running is beginning again to feel good. I just have to go my own pace and do what the hip/back will let me. I'm really looking foward to getting out onto some different trails soon. Not that the Garden ain't BEAUTIFUL but the variety of offerings in my neighborhood is worth a bit of discovery. Each spring the trails become alive and they are different each year.
And I'm beginning to feel like a jogger almost.

Trying

I am trying hard to get the motivation back. Between all the excuses and thinking I may have another heriated disc,it's been rough. But into the sun and wind I go today for day # 4 in a row. For the next 4-6 week I'll wear my heart monitor and keep the HR low. I seem to enjoy these runs and they are easier on the old body.
Take for example Tuesday. I got home from work and had an allergy headache. Sat on the couch and woke up and hour later. I had a nice droll spot on my shirt. I went into the bedroom and lay down. Then OH NO I need to run. So I grabbed both dogs and went into the Garden. Fifty minutes later I was back home. It was so SSLLOOWWWW. But it was a run.
I have finally figured out the difference between a 'runner' and a 'jogger'. A runner trains with a goal in mind; a jogger just goes out and jogs with no goal other than getting out. Do you agree?

Mothers Day comes early

Run Like a Mother, RLAM, book signing was last night at The Colorado Running Company. I have not seen that many strollers since....????? never. It was inspiring seeing and talking to all the Moms who know what is important. Some of the Moms could even understand my 'John Speak' which was a plus! What is most important to a Mom is that/those children! What is important to those children is the Mom! These Moms realise that if they are not active and healthy they are not around for their children. Children want Moms. Case in point my Mom.
Every year she would ask us kids what we wanted for Christmas. The answer Mom quit smoking; we want you around. With a giggle she would ask again what did we want. Well Mom died of cancer. And I miss her. Keep healthy and active Moms. Be around to see your kid become what he/she wants to be. And you know some Moms who need the push. Push Hard for the Children.

Springtime MAYBE

Haven't blogged much the past 2 weeks because there weren't much to blog about. My low back has been hurting and there hasn't been too much in the way of running. Good news is I've forgone the wheat out of my diet and the breathing is much improved. Now I just gotta get the damn low back to feel better.
Today I ran 42 minutes in the Garden. A bit chilly but NO WIND and the ytrails are in perfect shape. Lots of people out there enjoying the weather and scenery. I can't believe the intelligence level of some of these folks. I had to run behind 2 older ladies on horses with 5 dogs running of the leash. They seemed surprized when I past them, with PJ on leash, and asked them to please control their dogs. PJ is aggressive and I didn't want them to fall of their horses when she attacked an un-minded dog. Then I thought wait it would be MY fault for having my dog on a leash while their dog "just wanted to say hi" and their horse threw them to the ground. I'm sure Mark W saw that accident waiting to happen. Oh well.
The plan is to run 30-45 minutes 6 days this week and see what the back does. I just have to take time for myself away from work so I can get healthy. These 6 day/60+ hour work weeks are not doing me any good. So if you come in to see me and I ain't there be glad for me!

Springtime

Looks like it could be a cold wet run today.

Monday, March 22, 2010

27 + 28

Those weeks are in the books. Nothing special.
Weather is typical Spring-Time in the Rockies wet snow 1 day the next 60's then more snow.
This week I've already gotten 12 miles in 2 days. Almost time to add another day of running. It seems if I get mileage early in the week it's easier to reach the weeks goals. I'll have 20 miles by Wednesday. Need to keep healthy.

How do you spell relief?

Ran 63 minutes in the Garden yesterday morning. Almost didn't make it past 5 minutes because of my back. But since I knew I was getting ART I went ahead and finished. Glad I did. Running by the 'Keyhole' I found some nice people had left their trash right in the hole. What a-holes themselves. I picked it up and took it the 100 yards to the nearest trash can. All along kinda hoping they were gored by the buck that charged me Saturday. That would be the ONLY reason to leave trash. Back to my low back; one leg was 3/4" shorter than the other. I knew I was twisted but this is a new all-time record! After a quick 5 minute session I am 95% back to normal. I need to pay more attention to this area. And not wait so long. (Sarah W you reading this) Can't wait to run this afternoon with the pups and the 'G'.

Monday, March 8, 2010

Ahhhh

Ran 6 miles in Red Rocks Sunday. Half with 'G' and PJ. The Pad was with me for the total run. This past week of 5 straight days running has left the bod feeling at bit overused. Low back is just hurting. Not muscular more joint/bone. Made an appointment for an adjustment. Not till Wednesday can I get in for the adjustment. DAMN.
So today is an off day. Possible run tomorrow. We'll run by feel.

This just in! 25

I am liking my running. The sun has been out most of the week. It is warming things up and drying the trails. I know we'll get lots more snow but the extra daylight and growing hope of even warmer temps will keep my waist from growing even more. Todays run was tough. I was so tired from work I had to have 2 cups of coffee at 3pm to get me going. I learned today that caffine stimulates brain activity. I'm gonna try pouring coffee into my ear for a more direct route!

Fun just gets in the way of my running.

Love/Hate

I am hating the cold and snow for my running. The treadmill is getting way old! And it hurts my lungs to run outside in below 30F.
But I am sure loving the powder on my board.

Monday, February 22, 2010

23

Oh well didn't hit that number but too bad. In 8 weeks of training I've not hit the goak 2x. I'll take that. This week is 24 miles and I'll run 4 x 6 miles to get it in. My legs at the moment are FRIED. All black runs and nice deep snow yesterday at Vail. It will be a slowass 6 miles tonight at Trinity. I hope I make it back in time to go to work Tuesday. I just maybe that SLOW.
But sore legs are worth it for a good time with the Mrs. Next week is her B-Day. And she wants 3 days in/on the snow. Better put on all my recovery tools. Or start drinking NOW.

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

22 and

Got in my miles last week and then more activity. This week will be tougher as I haven't run the 1st 2 days of the week. What?? When the snow is up past your knees on the snowboard it's time to enjoy that activity. And did we! My IT-bands were so tight and sore from doing power jumps in the flatter sections I didn't know if I could make it back to the car after boarding. But we found a cure; pitchers of GOOD margs apres-board. Gotta crank up the running for the rest of the week, 23 miles damn.
I've decided once I get to 24 I'll run 4 days of 6 miles the first week and add 1 mile to my long run till i'm at 30 miles. Then 5 days of 6 miles and add till ?????

On the drive home I saw a herd of ~ 150 elk and a few miles later saw some baby Buffalo.
Hope I didn't have their mom for dinner.

Almost Biblical!

Almost 40 days and 40 nights I went. I had my first bad eating day of the year yesterday. In the 55 years previous I would have 2 days/week and possibly more. Damn those butter cookies in the backroom at Colorado Running Company. I've cut my ice cream consumption down to~ 3% of what it was. Do I miss it, yes, do I crave it, NO. Good news is my alcohol consumption is UP a bit. That's what makes the NO bad eating thing a bigger deal. The last time I had apple pie ala mode I had had a good quantity of beer/wine. And I forgot I wasn't going to eat bad tasty stuff. Thanks to those who helped me eat that horrible dessert. You know who you are.

Saturday, February 6, 2010

21

Got in 4 miles on the treadmill this afternoon. The store was crazy busy today. I felt like I worked a 12 hour shift and it was 11:00am. Decided not to go to the mountains tonight just too tired. Got home and had a sniffle will go to bed early and get some sleep.
I've said this before but the last few days I've felt almost like a runner. Much more relaxed and running a bit faster. I've been averaging under 9 mm for all my runs even with potty breaks!
Got a long run of 6 miles planned for Sunday. Then 16 miles for the other 5 days running.

SOS

Not the need for help just same old $hit. Slept like a rock last night! I have no idea what that means but I'll be scared as all get out when the rocks wake up. Imagine that! My house will be flattened the first time that big red rock in my backyard stretches. Monkeys will definately fly out my ass.
Got to run yesterday at about noon. The sun was out and it was almost warm. I wanted to run an hour but work seemed to find it's way to borrow run time. 35 minutes of run time is infinetely better than zero. As a bonus I got to take 'The J" out for a run. She is really a good little running partner. Unlike most of the females that surround me she actually does what I ask. And wants to do what I ask. If she could only cook.

20

I missed 19 but it almost happened. Salt Lake/condo travel left my legs feeling like well my legs. Fat heavy and just not good. I have a problem with calves and sometimes it's not wise to push it. So last week was 17 miles/ This week was 20 but I had to walk the last 7 miles of the week. Thursday I just had low back joint pain. Not muscular but I could tell I needed a crack. Couldn't get one but a different bed and some cobra stretches did the trick. The old back is cracking like normal. Was actually able to run today and got a good start on this week.
On a side note I used a very supportive shoe to walk last night. My shins were killing me all morning. They still ache.

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Cheater

Yes, I cheated today. I was running a bit tardy and ran some intervals on the treadmill.
10 x 2minutes @ 8.0mph. I was not suposed to run faster until March. It's like cheating.

Sunday, January 17, 2010

18

Everyone gives me 'that' smile when I say I can't run more than X amount of miles for the day. Customers at Colorado Running Company give me that smile and a slight giggle. But it takes some planning and some caution to run just 18 miles a week. I could get all my miles for the week in 1 day. But I want to get in at least 5 days a week. So that means planning. This week was a bunch of 3-4 mile runs.
After a movie, first since Star Wars 2 in a theater, Cindy and I had a nice dinner. I think we planned our vacations for the year. The wine had much to do with the talk.
The finacial situations will dictate the real plans.
This week the plan is 19 miles. I should get a bunch in today, but not over an hour, with Cindy in Red Rocks. Wednesday-Friday I'll be in Salt Lake City for OR. I'll have to count on my running store freinds to help me get out.

Sunday, January 10, 2010

and back to square 1

My week; 3.5 miles :(
What happened? Woke up Monday morning feeling good. Went to work and my back started to ache. No biggie, right? Well for someone who has sufferd thru a back surgery it is a big deal! I think I just did too much without paying attention to my core. And doing more core was a New Years resolution. Had to do when you are hurting. So I'm out the door today to walk/jog in the Garden and see what happens. Then down to the basement for core exercise.

Not a Happy New Year!

I waited until today, January 2, to write. This way I am not tempted to say Happy New Year like every other blogger in the world. We started off the day yesterday at Vail. THe internet told us that Blue Sky was to open. So got on an un-godly long catwalk early in the day just to be told
"oh, it will open at noon." DAMN. My quads were already under stress from the catwalk and then I went somewhere WAY beyond my level. Who says you get wiser as you get older. I should've known not to go down that slope looking at all the skiers falling. Oh well.
Back at the condo we napped then went for a short run to start the year off right. Heading out the parking lot we saw 3-4 moose standing in the road. They are bigger than me, not by much, so I decided we should just go another way around. As we made the loop back there was a Jeep in the road ~ where we saw the moose. Sure enough they were still in the road. I ran up to the passenger side of the Jeep and told the driver we were going to use him for cover. He replied that evrytime he moved forward the moose went back into the road. He was going to back up and go the way we just came. DAMN, that retracing of the run doubled the distance. But it was not too more effort. But I had to run up the hill I just came down and at 9800' uphill is really not my friend! So getting home Cindy immediately looked up Moose attacks. What she really needs to look up is husband attacks!
